It is no surprise that the USA went through a Baby Boom. It paralleled a growing economy and a desire to live the good life after years of fear and tight wallets.
Like the surging economy the car industry’s tide was exceptionally high. Like a tsunami, car manufacturing ramped up to meet the demands of post-war consumers and a broadening middle class. With new drivers growing in number so did the competition for their dollars. To feed this desire for new designs technology and style were merged - a sign of customers’ changing wants and hunger for status.
The dominant style of the 50s was chrome with a little more chrome thrown in. It was reflected in grill work of chrome that wouldn’t quit, gleaming chrome center caps or bold tail fins of chrome, there appeared to be no end for this bright shiny metal. The more, the better.
This fascination with the shine and sparkle of chrome is alive and kicking with today’s car enthusiasts. And who can blame them? Chrome plating is resistant to corrosion, can be tinted and just has an innate visual appeal - kinda like diamonds, icicles and twinkle lights… only more manly.
Aftermarket tailpipes, running boards and roll bars are coated with unalloyed chromium through electroplating. Designer rims and aftermarket center caps for rims are another way to improve the style or your ride.
This chrome plating can be applied at different thicknesses, so check out the specs to determine the potential wear resistance of your accessory when making a decision. If you can’t find it, ask the sale rep. A better idea is to ask the manufacturer. It should go without saying that you should do your research before putting down your money. Don’t catch a case of “rim remorse” - especially after spending a week or two of paychecks.
With the assistance of a good website, you can find parts by the manufacturer’s SKU or the Hollander number. A locator service is another way to help you locate the chrome grill, chrome tail pipes, wheel center caps (chrome, of course) and other chrome parts that can transform your ride from blah to blingin’!
